| DENIS SHAPOVALOV - Cello
“Brilliant talent!” – with these words Denis SHAPOVALOV was characterized by Mstislav Rostropovich.
He is apart from the majority of gifted cellists with his fine and penetrating comprehension of the works he performs, his razor-sharp technique, and his incredibly expressive and lofty interpretation.
Born in a musical family in the town of Tchaikovsky in 1974, Denis SHAPOVALOV started his cello lessons at age 7. He made his solo debut with an orchestra at age 11.
He has been awarded “Best Hope” at the International Chamber Music Competition in Australia. Two years later he became a recipient of the Rostropovich Charity Foundation scholarship. He has the First Prize and the Gold Medal at the XI International Tchaïkovsky Competition.
In 2000 he finished the post-graduate course of the Moscow State Conservatoire, where he studied with Professor Natalia Shakhovskaya, and since 2001 he has been teaching at the Conservatoire of Music in the Cello Department.
For his American debut in 2000, Denis SHAPOVALOV gave a successful performance at the World Cello Congress in Baltimore and gained a victory at the Web Concert Hall International Competition held in New York. He was then invited to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra in the concert series celebrating Rostropovich’s 75th birthday in New York and London.
Denis SHAPOVALOV collaborates with orchestras such as Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg, the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
He works under such distinguished conductors as Lorin Maazel, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Vladimir Fedosseev, Yutaka Sado, Yoel Levi, Thomas Sanderling. His music partners are Rodion Schedrin, Vadim Repin, Nikolai Znaider, Graf Mourja, Alexander Ljubimov, John Nakamatsu, and Alexander Ghindin.
Denis SHAPOVALOV's performances are held in the world’s major concert halls: la Philharmonie de Munich, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Royal Festival Hall , Barbican Center in London, Avery Fisher Hall in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
He has an exclusive program of his own compositions with electric instruments, showing the different abilities of cello, playing in different styles - from classic to rock, impressionism to light music. The premiere of the program “Night Streets” took place in the frames of the Moscow Biennale of contemporary performing Arts in March 2007.
Denis SHAPOVALOV has recorded a CD “Cello Masterpieces” on Melodiya. He is an active participant of different contemporary music projects. Many works by modern composers are dedicated to the musician.
